Pastor of Discipleship and Small Groups


Position Description

The incumbent will be responsible for oversight of the discipleship ministries within HCBC, including leading and executing the overall church life group and biblical equipping strategy. This will be accomplished by establishing and executing program vision, mentoring life group coachers/leaders, recruiting/training leaders and integrating members into life groups and service.


Organizational Status

The Discipleship Pastor reports to the Executive Pastor. He will work directly with the Senior Pastor, Church Staff, Life Group Coaches, Life Group Leaders, Teaching Volunteers, Connections Leaders, Board of Elders and other ministry lay leaders to set overall direction and vision for life groups, equipping, discipleship, and shepherding ministries. Considers and analyzes the implications of proposed actions and decisions and coordinates with other ministry leaders and pastoral staff. He will also work closely with the Senior Pastor and other assigned individuals on the HCBC Teaching Team in sermon development and presentation.


Roles and Responsibilities

• Responsible for administration of all aspects of the life group ministry
• Provides leadership and direction for ministry direct reports as assigned
• Sets vision and goals for life group, equipping and other discipleship ministries
• Organizes and oversees special events for life group ministries
• Provide leaders with approved and reviewed biblical curriculum
• Equips and oversees a team of volunteers to act as teachers and mentors within all areas of discipleship ministries
• Assists in creating an atmosphere that promotes strong church connections and service within the total church body
• Provides counseling and pastoral care as needed to members

• Life group member integration – timing and percentages
• Ministry strategic planning – timing, accuracy and activities
• Ministry process – creation and execution
• Ministry development and training– creation and execution
• Ministry performance – monitoring and assessment
• Ministry involvement - volunteerism


Qualifications and Requirements

• A passionate love for the Lord, people and a desire to serve in local church-wide ministry
• University undergraduate degree
• Seminary degree conferred or in process
• Individual must possess a minimum of seven years of proven leadership and management with a high skill and competency level demonstrated
• Previous life group leadership experience from development to implementation and evaluation is required
• Ability to lead and motivate diverse groups of people – volunteers, employees, peers, leadership and ministry associates
• Sound and deep biblical theology consistent with the views of HCBC
• In step with the future direction of HCBC with regards to mission, vision and strategy
• Ability to substantively contribute and add significant value to the HCBC leadership team
• Exhibit excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
• Must possess a strong work ethic
